Get Out Tonight: The Purrs CD Release Party @ the Sunset Tavern

The Chemistry That Keeps Us Together, The Purrs' long-awaited follow-up to their breakout LP The Dreams Our Stuff is Made Of, dropped a couple weeks ago, and we've been listening to it steadily since.

Earlier this year, they promised us the album was moving in a new direction, exploring harder rock material, exemplified by the song "She's Got Chemicals," which has been in their set list for over a year now. It opens with a chord progression strummed uncharacteristically hard for The Purrs, but after a few bars the lead cuts in with the familiar reverb-heavy shimmer. "Waiting for the Asteroid," another notable cut off the new album, is near-glammy in its approach, and like "She's Got Chemicals" it's got an anthemic chorus. But the song that struck us most on the album is the first track "Drive." With a melancholy chiming lead-line and some beautifully bleeding bended notes in the verse, it reeks of a depressing dive bar somewhere along the California coastline where the sun's low in the west over the ocean and burning through a pollution heavy sky.

The Chemistry That Keeps Us Together has its release party tonight at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard. The Purrs will take the stage with Black Nite Crash and The Upsidedown.
