After kittens yawning and cross-species friendship, dear sweet Jens Lekman may be the most precious thing found in all of nature. The Gothenberg Swede makes orchestral pop songs in the vein of Morrissey or the Magnetic Fields without even being gay (just European). To promote Night Falls Over Kortedala, one of the best reviewed albums of the year, Jens has been touring around the States with his almost-all-girl backing band:
For the 10/23-11/10 leg of tour, Lekman will be backed by a mostly female band, playing bass, drums, trumpet, accordion, sax, violin, viola, keyboards, and various electronics. For an added twist, the tour will feature a non-traditional slot for its main support act: Band member Viktor Per Sjöberg, will handle sampling and beat production, alongside Lekman as DJ, to close out the show. They'll segue the live show into a DJ set, to fuel the giddy energy that remains after a Lekman show.
Apparently on this tour, Jens has also been doing a cover of "You Can Call Me Al," which only serves to further warm the cockles of our otherwise cold, dead heart. He'll be playing Nectar tonight, or catch him at a free in-store at Easy Street Queen Anne at 6pm.
And now a few words about Nectar: Since its remodel and grand re-opening at the beginning of August, the Fremont lounge has really upped its game. The schedule has been solid (thanks to former Chop Suey booker Colin Johnson), and the venue's calendar is the best-designed in town. Seriously, take a look: shows labeled by genre; clearly stated times, opening acts, and prices (not to mention ticketing through Brown Paper Tickets); detailed blurbs for each show, along with links to relevant websites? Yes! All that and more! DO WANT!

Around The -Ists This Week

I'm actually pretty psyched about Nectar's new look myself. Such a helpful website, and they've been kind to hiphop lately!
hear, hear (or is it here, here?) w/r/t nectar's calendar. both the content and presentation are delightful. now, if only someone would do the same for the showbox's site.
also, nobody has said anything about this, but jens is doing a free in-store show at easy street records in queen anne at 6.
