If you saw the film Once, you know that one day Irishman Glenn Hansard met Czechwoman Marketa Irglova and they made beautiful music together. Actually, there's a whole backstory there. Martha Wainwright opens for them tonight at the Moore.
The band/album, The Swell Season, is named after a novel by Czech author Josef Skvorecky who may be better known for his novel, The Engineer of Human Souls, a little Stalin smack from back when people were still personally pissed off at the mustachioed fruitcake.
But we digress. So far as we know, The Swell Season doesn't have an official position on Stalin. They play the sweet folk music of loss and attraction, mingling Irish and Czech sounds; both sing, mingling Irish and Czech voices, and both play, Hansard on guitar, Irglova on piano.

Thank you NPR indeed! I love the Once soundtrack and I miss it, as it is now residing in the bowels of Acer tech support along with my stupid bargain computer tower. Really really beautiful music.
