Get Out Tuesday: Yo La Tengo

It's not often the Seattlest feels the need to research a show before we go to see it, but Yo La Tengo's current tour has a really fascinating description:

The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo Tour is a rare opportunity to see this ever-surprising band in a setting more intimate and interactive than any tour in their 23-year career. A little bit "Storytellers," a little bit "Unplugged," with a soupcon of their famously varied Hanukkah shows, it will feature the band playing an almost-acoustic set of songs from their entire catalog, with stories about their life as a band, and an encouraged back-and-forth with the audience.

Admittedly, it sounds like some over-the-top PR, but we're convinced that tonight's show at Town Hall is going to be something special. For one, they are always having a good time. But reviews of the tour make this one sound particularly enticing:

"The performance acquired the format of storytelling sessions and song requests interspersed with a smattering of songs from the band’s comprehensive collection.

After reminiscing about a not-so-well-received performance as Johnny Cash’s opening act, the band played a song by Johnny Cash. After being asked how they felt about constant comparisons to the Velvet Underground, they followed with a song by the Velvet Underground.

According to Kaplan, the premise of this tour is to "do stuff one night and never do it again."

We'll review it, but you should go experience it on your own.
