Trivia Vagabond: Cooper's Alehouse
Seattlest left Cooper's Alehouse at 10:40 last night with a brand new bucket, part of our team's prize for coming in 5th place. And we wondered why we'd never managed to check out their trivia night when we lived within walking distance. It was a good quiz.
Cooper's quiz is scheduled for 8:45 Tuesday nights, though last night's kicked off at 9:00. It's 40 questions, uncategorized. Teams trade answer sheets for scoring. After about 15-20 minutes the host announces results. That's a longish delay, but it's a well-paced quiz overall.
It costs $1 per person, and there's no team size limit. Our team of three took fifth place with 29 points, thanks to a relatively small size and our own foolishness.
Among other things, we broke the cardinal rule of pub trivia: don't reject your gut instinct answer based on niggling doubts. (Second cardinal rule of pub trivia: you'll do that at least once a quiz.) What show has had 25+ actors play multiple roles? Our gut answer: Law & Order. Our reconsidered answer: ER. Actual answer: Law & Order. Shit.
A healthy mix of well-written questions included '90s Oscar nominees, Madonna's new recording contract, smoking in the white house, presidential woo, TV commercials, and college football.
The top 4 teams won cash prizes: $35 to first place, $26 to second, $18 to third, and $14 to fourth. (You'll never get rich playing pub quiz.) We won our bucket, a t-shirt, a bottle of wine, and a canvas tote bag, and sixth and seventh places also won wine.
We had the old standby fish and chips for dinner, which was large but bland -- haddock encased in thick, unsalted batter. They have Spire cider on tap, and a decent selection of beer (from what we can tell).
Team consensus when we left: we'll be back, especially when our interested players may break the team limits at the Old Pequilar or Kate's.
