Jim Blanchard Portland Art Exhibit Now Online

We were bummed we didn't make it down to Portland for Jim Blanchard's show at the Night Gallery (we were stuck at the Ballard Sunset Bowl where we overheard a guy in the bathroom piss AND puke at the same time, which can't be normal. Who pukes standing, while pissing?), but lucky for us the show is now on the gallery's site. There are some classics here - including the Afrouni-Teat, a version of which we already own - plus some new surprises like the image above, evidently titled Le Spider, 2006-2007 acrylic on stretched canvas, 20 x 20 inches.

Here's an impressively accurate, well-written statement from the site:

Born to be one of those artists who ‘abnormalize’ perfection, Mr. Blanchard has grown through the humus of Punk and circus of Grunge into a beast of his own Craft. Techniques are his Bronsonesque “holy monsters” striking the Id’s abreactions with a fanatic design-control, turning subconscious grossisms into cameos of leisure -- free to be otiose, but locked as omens, Blanchard’s art is on to us. He recalls, “I remember being called 'SpaceMan' when I was 12 years old by the other guys on the baseball team. I’ve got a lazy eye, which makes people think I’m retarded, and I’ve always had bizarre interests, even when I was really young.”
