There are not enough hours in the day. Just. Not. Enough. If we weren't already going to the New Pornographers show tonight, we'd likely be found at the Ten Tiny Dances performance at CHAC (7:30pm, $15). If you haven't seen it before, the idea is there's a 4' x 4' platform that the dancers have to (more or less) stay on for their performance, like when we were kids and the floor was lava. Lava!
Also, if you know anything about local dance, you'll know that this line-up is terrific: Paige Barnes, Heather Budd, Stephen Hando & Juliet Waller Pruzan, Dayna Hanson, Aiko Kinoshita & Aaron Swartzman, locust, Wade Madsen, and the Crispin Spaeth Dance Group. Here's our review of the last show, to give you an idea. Also, it's at CHAC and there are drinks. It runs through the 16th. Maybe we can make Sunday's show.
On Saturday night we'll be at PNB for their "First Look" season preview and party (6:30pm, $50 and up). On the bill is a peek at Roméo et Juliette by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo's Jean-Christophe Maillot, David Parsons' spectacular Caught, Jerome Robbins' comic The Concert, Balanchine's Ballet Imperial, and Edwaard Liang’s pas de deux Für Alina (a "gem" they say).
If you're a ballet high roller (we are not), there's a dinner, blackjack, dancing, and other peacockery to be had: photographer Marc von Borstel photo shoot of PNB dancers dressed by Mario’s. Honestly, proximity to ballerinas gives us the same jittery feeling we used to have working around high-strung horses -- just one accidental kick and the next thing you know, you're trying to extract yourself from the side of the barn. Don't say you weren't warned.
