Other than the Apple Cup, Garfield High vs. Franklin High is the best sports rivalry this area has to offer.
Both are "inner-city schools" (with all that connotes), and the guys on the teams have usually been playing against each other since they were kids.
Winning this game means bragging rights in the neighborhood until you die.
Unexpected things happen at rivalry games--like when we went last year, and Nate Robinson was there to watch his little brother.
Jacques Jr. has graduated, but we've keen interest in today's game since Garfield (our alma mater dear) might actually win! They upset Lake Washington last week for their first win in like forever, a win that was all the more impressive coming as it did against an Eastside school. (Eastside schools usually obliterate city schools in football, because they can afford helmets).
Franklin mashed Garfield 33-12 last year, but the big difference in that game, 6-2, 240lb. RB Andre Davis, has graduated. Maybe this is Garfield's year.
Both Franklin and Garfield are coached by former UW star receivers who are graduates of the schools they coach: Franklin by Mario Bailey, Garfield by Anthony Allen.
Game's at 7:30 tonight at Memorial Stadium.
