Feel like doing a little Oktoberfest drinking this weekend, Washington style? The Washington Beer Commission is holding their 1st annual Oktoberfest at St. Edwards State Park on Lake Washington in Kenmore. There are going to be some great local brewers there, but don't expect to find any of the big German brewers.
There will of course be the requisite oompah music and German food from local vendors (doesn't get much more German than that!). If you're lucky, maybe you will spot the drunk guy in lederhosen. While not nearly as convenient as the Oktoberfest in Fremont that will be held the following weekend (We will preview next week), this festival promises to be a good time and offers a top-notch beer list. Local brewers will be bringing their best Oktoberfest style or Fall seasonal beers. Here are a few standouts from the offerings:
Boundary Bay Harvest Ale - We always love Boundary Bay's IPAs, and we can't wait to try this fresh hop ale from the Bellingham brewery. This is one of at least 7 "fresh hop" harvest beers that will appear at the festival.
Baron Oktoberfest - This still relatively new Seattle brewery specializes in German style beers year-round. Their Oktoberfest ranks towards the top of the list of attempts from American craft brewers. Made spot-on to the traditional Oktoberfest style, it is smooth and balanced with just enough sweetness. Made entirely with ingredients imported from Germany.
Harmon Puget Sound Vanilla Porter - Take Harmon's Puget Sound Porter, which is made with 8 different malts, and add some vanilla beans to a keg and you get this fantastic treat. They achieve lots of vanilla aroma and taste with just 3 vanilla beans per keg. This would make for a good dessert before you leave the festival…
Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale - A very nice, ligtly spiced fall seasonal from Elysian. You'll find a bit of nutmeg, pumpkin, cinnamon and clove in the aroma and taste. All that's missing is the whipped cream.
We've laid out the ticket and location details for you after the break.

It was awesome. A couple buddies and myself cruised out there before the MMW show at the Moore on Friday night to pre-funk like no other. The hops were out in full force, with pretty much everyone sporting a fresh-hopped variety of something. As a WABL member, I got the snazzy glass mug and extra-tall "3oz." pours (more like 8-10oz on average). I managed to make it through 15 of my 18 tokens and bestowed the honor of "full glass" on RAM Brewery's ZZ Hops. And that Harmon Vanilla Porter was probably my second favorite. The only vanilla beers I've had have ALWAYS been too sweet, so I was reluctant. But this wasn't too sweet (infact among the least sweet of the porters being poured) and amazingly good.
I haven't been to a Seattle-area brew fest before, and based on this one, I definitely am looking forward to the Winter Beer Festival.
