The Avett Brothers 1, Arizona Football 0

The Avett Brothers make Arizona football coach Mike Stoops look even more like a pussy than he typically does.

Ya see, while packed into the 20-deep, stage-width-wide crowd for The Avett Brothers at the Mural Amphitheater, we had one eye--as we often do--on a sporting event.

The banjo is the Avetts' featured instrument, and it takes no small amount of moxie to try to rock out an outdoor crowd with a banjo.

For one thing, you have to play the banjo extremely hard, with the consequence that you break strings, and have to toss your banjo to a guitar tech and grab a backup. This happened at least five times.

Then, even if you hit the strings hard, you must wear metal fingerpicks to amplify your playing, and these picks tend to fly off.

Yet it all worked. Banjos and picks were flying, but the crowd was hopping.

Meanwhile, in the Arizona/BYU game (we were watching play-by-play updates on our phone), Mike Stoops, down 14 in the fourth quarter, called a punt from the BYU 36. Granted, it was fourth and 20, but only a complete wimp punts there. (as you can probably guess, the punt was a touchback, and the 'Cats gained only 16 yards of field position).

Later in the quarter, on a 4th and 7, he called a pass that only went for 3 yards.

Can you be any more of a pussy? We suspect not.

The Avett Brothers continued to rock out, playing about half songs from their new album "Emotionalism," which fucking rules and which you should purchase immediately.

Do not purchase tickets to an Arizona football game.
