Do Cougs Have More Pride? We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes

couggarter.JPGJim Moore of the P-I reports this shocking news today: The Wazzu Cougars have passed the UW Huskies in apparel sales, according to a company that keeps track of such things.

This is crazy! To wit:

Not only does U-Dub have nearly twice the enrollment of Wazzu (43K to 23K), the Huskies are in a major metropolitan area where tons of people who never went to Washington adopt the team as their own (this Seattlest included).

Also, Husky fans would seem to have more money to spend on apparel, because Washington alumni, on average, have jobs.

So what explains the Cougar apparel preeminence? Moore asked a Wazzu associate athletic director to explain. Said he:

There's something special about being a Cougar. I defy you to find a Cougar who doesn't have six sweatshirts, 10 T-shirts and a jacket. There's a pride there. People want to wear their colors.
That, or they keep forgetting their clothes after they remove them in a drunken stupor on Jalapeno Popper and Coronas in a Bucket night.

We kid. Maybe it's the underdog nature of being a Cougar, but the Wazzu official's comments ring true. The two Coug fans in our office seem to sport Coug gear at least once a week, while we hardly ever see any purple or gold.

We wore lots of Husky gear as a kid--that 1985 Orange Bowl t-shirt disintegrated on our body, we think--but now we're down to one ill-fitting t-shirt that we wear ironically on game day. What of it, Husky fans? Why aren't you wearing your purples?

You can buy that Cougs garter for $16.49 on eBay

Hey I wore my Husky polo to the office yesterday. At last count I have 2 polos, 2 hats, and 3-4 T-shirts. Not to mention my '01 Rose Bowl windbreaker.

I wear my Wazzu Cougar colors to work twice a week, and I live in Connecticut. Everybody where I work knows the growling Cougar head logo because of me. I see lots of Husky apparel out here all the time, but it's all Blue and White. UConn fans have pride too. U-Dub fans are jaded.

It's the colors. Maroon and gray are much more stylish than purple and yellow.
