Seattlest Beer Spots - Elysian Tangletown

After living 56 steps (Yes, we counted several times) from this branch of the Elysian Brewery, Elysian Tangletown will always be one of our favorites.

The beer: Most Seattle beer drinkers have tried at least a couple of Elysian's beers. Their standard lineup ranges from decent to great, and we love some of the special releases they put out. The Dragonstooth Stout is top notch, as is their Porter. Tangletown gets to brew some of Elysian's smaller, more experimental beers. One of our favorite treats was trying their St. Valentines Chocolate Stout last year on Valentines Day. Elysian's Fall/Winter beers tend to be some of their best though. Keep your eye out for their pumpkin beers in October/November. Their winter ale, Bi-Frost, is always a favorite as well.
If you don't feel like a beer, they do have a full bar with a nice list of specialty cocktails. They are also the only place in town that we have been able to find Becherovka, an herbal Czech liquor that is great on the rocks.

The atmosphere: The bar and restaurant are both very relaxed and perfect for hanging out with friends or pulling up a stool at the bar solo style. A great group of regulars and a friendly staff make it easy to start up a conversation (Although, they probably don't miss our rants about the Cubs and Bears....). A TV up in the corner is usually on the Mariners or cartoons (or just turned off), depending on the time you come in. "Garage door" windows that completely open up make the bar especially inviting during nice weather.

The food: Tangletown serves top notch bar food. Overall, better quality than the Cap. Hill location's offerings. They do offer a much smaller selection of food though. The weekly specials are often the way to go. We remember having quite possibly our favorite mussel appetizer ever at Tangletown. Their weekend brunch is also fantastic (We suggest the Eggs Benedict and a Bloody Mary!).

Overall: Just a great neighborhood corner bar to grab some beers. It gets pretty packed during happy hour at times and on weekend evenings. Some people in Seattle seem to have a beef against Elysian, but they're all right in our book.

Becherovka (which I happen to love, after trying it by chance on a train from Venice to Naples while participating in a drug deal which involved bribing a stoned girl with fresh Mozzarella cheese), is also available at all three of Chris Navarra's German Pubs: Prost!, Feierabend and Die Bierstube.

Happy Becharovka-ing, everyone!

I first tried it on a train from Venice to Naples, while involved in trading fresh mozzarella cheese for marijuana. It has always created other great memories since then, as well...

TangleTown also has a series of special beer tastings going on Wednesday evenings. They had sour reds last night.

Call me crazy, but the atmosphere of Tangletown is just a little bit snooty and sterile for me. I much prefer Lenny's across the street. Although perhaps not on a Friday or Saturday night.
