This Can't Be Happening at Our Gas Works Park (and what is happening, btw?)

Hey Seattlest,

Any idea what's going on at Gas Works Park this weekend? It looks
like they're setting up for a big rock show or something. I walked up
there last night, and the security guard just said it was for an
invite-only private party on Aug 10, the whole park will be closed to
the public, and that he couldn't tell me who the rock bands were that
were going to be appearing. So, I'm dying to know what the deal is.
And I figured if anyone would know, it would be you guys.

532798235_28a7c32eac_m.jpgThat vote of confidence warms our little hearts, reader, but we've unfortunately deduced from the remainder of your email that you are completely insane. After the Summer Nights at Rusty Industrial Equipment Park series was stamped out by local residents last year we realized that Gas Works is for throwing frisbees, flying kites, teaching crazy dance routines and watching fireworks only. Private concerts that close the entire park to the public just aren't on the list. 1) It's a public park that we all pay to enjoy. 2) Has an environmental impact study been done? 3) Where will the local residents park?

On the off chance that you weren't hallucinating last night, though, we'll put this up and see if anyone else knows what's going on.

Hmm, I called the Parks Department permit people and they said they couldn't tell me who it was, but would transfer me to Virginia Swanson's office, which is where that info would reside. Virginia's voicemail said leave a message and "I'll get back to you on Monday." Dead end!

Or not! Virginia says: "A small 'L' shape portion of the park is being used for a private party on Saturday, August 11, 2007. The music is for dinner guests and does not have 'rock music' as part of the evening's entertainment. There is not any concert in the park."

*sigh*

"Last year some of us stayed past dark."

Wow, you guys are good.

Wow. Republicans?

August 21st is too far off, something is going down this week.

Strange that Ms. Swanson said no concert. They were putting up scaffolding when I was down there two days ago.

What kind of pull do you have to have in this town to disrupt the park for at least 5 days worth of set up time (including parking sheds and cars within the fenced area around the works)?

Whatever it is, I'm totally going to be there, just outside the "L-shape"

It is a private birthday party. Although I don't have the name, supposedly it is for someone fairly well known.

PJ Patches? The Pope? No, wait, I know, there's only one person with enough pull to shut down public places in that area for her own convenience, that would be Suzie Burke.

Happy Birthday Suz!

After reading this post, I heard a coworker make a comment that he was singing this weekend for a wedding in gasworks park. It's a gospel choir from different churches and apparently the hosts are providing robes and paying $100 a piece (that's $10,000 alone). It starts at 8 on Saturday. I don't know who would be pulling such an event, but sounds intriguing.

I didn't get many details. It could be a birthday, but he said it was a wedding.

I'm personally working for the gas works park event i dont even know. there is a paper floating aroung very "hush hush" sighing it intitked you to the info but if you divulge said info you are subject to arrest and emmediate legal problems. what i have learned it that the project is huge millions have gone into this. it is either 1) a sweet 16 birthday party (unlikely) 2)party for boeing employees, celebrating the launch of the 787 or 3) an exentirc billioaires birthday (the most likely) decide for yourself. the party is invitation only so good luck

I just found out that Melinda Gate's birthday is...........
AUGUST 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do you guys think?

Thank me please, my name is Amaia

Wow Amaia, you are a genius. I love you.

That was my husband.

oh amaia how cood this be.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I went down to see,,, it was a movie set!!

Why didn't anyone figure that out!

You pay EXTRAS $100 a piece

I heard the choirs sing,, Oh HAPPY DAY

I was down there this afternoon and saw multiple stages being setup complete with PA and sound checks.
My guess, a big bash to celebrate this weekend's world premiere test debut of Mel Brook's "Young Frankenstien" at the paramount. I've heard Mel himself is in town.

The word floating around the watchers-on from behind the white picket fence was that the guy who started Schuck's Auto Parts was throwing a wedding for his daughter... Who knows if that has anything to do with what was going on, but the fireworks were among the best I've ever seen. Good on 'em.

Hey..."QUEST"! You wrote "p.J. Patches" Tell me was that a real morning kids show in the 70's? I lived in Seattle 73-75 and I thought I remembered this really cool show called P.J. Patches. You are the only one on the entire internet (yahoo) that wrote it. Did it really exist? Was it only a Seattle show? Does anybody know? Please reply.
ooogah shakah

Yes. P.J. Patches was areal morning show for kids. It really existed. It was really only a Seattle Area show. It really is awesome. P.J. Patches still shows up from time to time.

PJ? that's pretty close, you mildly-dyslexics - it was actually J.P. Patches. check yr intertubez: http://www.jppatches.com/
