There's a film crew all set up and shooting some kind of car/shoot 'em up scene right now at 1st and Stewart. We noticed them from our office perched high above the director's chair and ran down to get some shots of our own.
When we asked a woman who looked like part of the crew what they're filming, she rubbed her eyes wearily and said in a thick German accent, "German television."
Um, OK. We decided to ask the woman who runs a cafe right by all the action if she knew anything. She said it was a German TV show called "Letters to Bill Gates -- or something like that."
We can't seem to find any useful info on the internets. Anyone out there clued in?
Oh, FYI: We heard they're moving on to shoot in Pike Place Market next. You could be on German TV! Ich bin berühmt!
UPDATE: The film is called "A Letter to Bill Gates" and stars Swiss-born Katharina Böhm. Hot! Prost Amerika Film News says:
The film... is described as "...a heartfelt story of a child who attempts to reconcile the loss of his father by taking a journey to Seattle to meet Bill Gates".

Residents of Capitol Hill got a letter saying that they'd be filming in Volunteer Park this weekend. I think it's a TV movie.
I wonder if the movie ends with the German kids realizing that Bill Gates does not live in the city of Seattle. At least they are actually filming on the real streets of Seattle unlike the hundreds of crappy shows filmed in LA or Vancouver that are supposed to be Seattle.

I saw the same scene being filmed as in the pictures at 1pm. By 2pm, they had moved to Steinbreuck Park. The trailers and catering tent is over by Cost Plus at Western and Elliott.
"...a heartfelt story of a child who attempts to reconcile the loss of his father by taking a journey to Seattle to meet Bill Gates".
Thus the gun.
I love seeing Seattle on TV. Remember the miniseries 10.5? There was a great shot of the Space Needle falling and taking out what, I suppose, was Second Avenue in Belltown, which would make the Space Needle like a mile and some tall. It just goes to show that everyone, everywhere thinks the Space Needle is like one of the buildings in the Jetsons.
Regarding the "gun", it is a water gun that the grandfather of the boy enjoys freaking people out with and was actually squirting water on the hood of the brown cadillac in the scene. I was the featured extra sitting in the passenger seat of the caddy. The scene previous to it in the film the grandfather was playing cops and robbers with a bank security guard friend of his and his son, driver of the car and father of the boy, had picked up up at the bank..is not a "shoot em up" movie.
Please stop editing this post!!! It continues to get reposted in Bloglines and I'm sick and tired of it.
Again w/ the fricking update. Lets move on!
@7&8... The only "update" occurred the same day the post went up -- Aug. 3rd.
Time to get a new aggregator?
The film is now called "Das 100 Millionen Dollar Date" and airs in Germany on SAT1 network 12/04/2007. From what see from trailers, even in German..looks great. Here are links to both a short trailer and a 7 minute long one, both with some good Seattle views.
