Are you there Seattle art world? It's us, Seattlest. We're trying our best to talk up your First Thursday openings, but it looks like you've crapped out on us this month. We understand: you're on vacation or something, it's kinda hot out, the BLUE ANGELS are in the sky ... We've got posts to post, however, and damned if we won't find something to recommend from your namby-pamby Art Walk offerings.
Here's what we're going for:
Diem Chau, Lost in Translation
Gallery4Culture
101 Prefontaine Place South
Chau grew up Chinese in Vietnam and the U.S. and brings an eclecticism to her work, here exploring themes of her childhood through embroidered portraits stitched into hanging, fabric-covered ceramics. See picture above, courtesy of Gallery4Culture.
2007 West Edge Sculpture Exhibition
Benaroya Hall/SAM/Harbor Steps Area
When Sutton-Beres-Culler sticks half a van in the sidewalk, we come running. And, well, we're just pro-public art in general, especially when it's big, it's loud, and tourists have to bump into it.
A Common Language: Seattle/Shenzhen
Gallery110
110 South Washington Street
Of this exhibit they've sponsored which brings art from China's Shenzhen Art Institute to Seattle, Seattle Print Arts says "In these times of great intolerance and grave misunderstandings the world needs the cultural ambassadors to examine and communicate the things that make each of us human." While we'd probably never actually say that, we like the idea.
And if you haven't already been ...
per our recommendations last month, three great exhibits are closing on Friday, so run run go go before Seafair hits, culture goes on vacation, and Seattle turns into Longview, WA* part II for the weekend:
Victoria Haven iampayingattention
Sean Duffy Group Show 3
Howard House
604 Second Avenue
Bill Fontana Objective Sound
Western Bridge
3412 Fourth Avenue
Ross Sawyers
Platform Gallery
114 Third Avenue South
* Don't even start; we grew up there and the Weyerhauser-Reynolds-Trojan infused water running through our veins gives us pleeeenty of bitching cred.
