Whether you're a fan of melodic noise-rock (not always a contradiction in terms) or just never got over a childhood obsession with dinosaurs, Pterodactyl is the band for you--especially if you like post-rock that doesn't take itself too seriously. They'll be playing at the Sunset tonight with two awesomely named bands we know absolutely nothing about: Nudity and Same Sex Dictator.
What we do know is that Pterodactyl has put out a well-reviewed debut album on Brah Records. Despite a name that evokes popped collars and 40s in brown paper bags, Brah is actually a subsidiary of the genuinely cool Jagjaguwar label (home to Okkervil River, Black Mountain/Pink Mountaintops, Ladyhawk, and Sunset Rubdown), and is not affiliated with tooly dudes in any way. As to those reviews: Pitchfork says that this spastic song is "dangerously accessible," and none less than the Village Voice/NPR's Robert Christgau praised the high-energy live show, in which the hard-hitting three-piece closed out their set by playing "the same climactic six-note riff for six minutes." You owe it to yourself to see if the self-proclaimed "Dean of American Rock Critics" still knows what the hell he's talking about.
