Java Joints of Jet City: Pettirosso

pettirossosmall.jpgRachel Hynes is a former barista and yet still enjoys spending time in espresso places. She will review them. This is her second such review.

Pettirosso (which means robin, or literally, red breast) is like finding a pretty bird in the middle of a city park. The shop is tucked right off of Pike street on Capitol Hill. The tiny shop is rustic, with exposed wood plank walls and shabby chic fixtures and furniture. Before ordering our coffee, we peruse the retro greeting cards and blank books.

We order our coffee from owner herself who pleasantly serves us while discussing baking tips with the barista. The barista, in turn, carefully pours our espresso shots over the water like she is slipping an egg into water for poaching.

We sit down to enjoy our coffee and break a piece off of our raspberry scone, expecting to find scone as per usual; a dense and overly sweet pastry. Instead, we find the scones are oven-fresh, light and not too sweet, offering warm, soft bite after bite. Pettiroso also includes a small breakfast menu and we move hungrily into a breakfast sandwich, deeming it "super-morning-tasty."

A large delivery truck from the national barricade company pulls in front of the shop, reminding us that we have to earn our daily bread. Going to work is worth it though, if we get to spend our earnings and our mornings here.

I was just in yesterday morning. It's a great little hideaway spot, and the lunch offerings are also pretty yummy. For smack-dab in Capitol Hill, it has an oddly regular-folks-ish clientele. Not so much the choice of the laptop brigade either.
