Win the Thieves of Kailua CD

Local music guy, Jason Holstrom, best known as a founding member of Wonderful and the happypartyfuntime supergroup United State of Electronica, has a new solo project: The Thieves of Kailua. Made over a three-year period and released on Mill Pond Records this past Tuesday, the self-titled album has its origins in a trip to Hawaii with his then-future/now-current wife.

In creating The Thieves of Kailua, Holstrom referenced traditional and modern production techniques, as well as catalogues of 60's pop and old Hawaiian and calypso albums. The result? Jambase calls it:

…a coconut dream pie for your ears. Beginning on a "Crystal Green" wave, Kailua surfs the coastline of Martin Denny, Friends of Dean Martinez, the High Llamas and Devo’s E-Z Listening Disc, with ska tangents and Les Paul and Mary Ford strange pop. As ice clunks into blenders and the days grow longer, this loving throwback goes down terrifically easy, conjuring visions of a sloshed Don Ho blowing tiny bubbles while bronzed beach babes stroll past in slow motion.

Meanwhile, Pitchfork liked what they heard when they gave a listen to the self-titled track. That's right: The song "The Thieves of Kailua" from the album The Thieves of Kailua from the band The Thieves of Kailua. Whoa.

Jason and Co. will be playing a hula-heavy record release show at Chop Suey Thursday August 9th, and The Thieves of Kailua also have a gig lined up at the Croc on Friday August 24th. Prep for both shows with a copy of the new album. Just fill out the form below for your chance to win. No worries: Your info is safe with us and will not be shared with advertisers and/or the government, yadda yadda yadda. We'll be drawing two winners Friday at 5pm.
