Holy Torta!

We were sitting at Uber Tavern this weekend drinking a few beers, and the bartender brings in these awesome looking sandwiches that he and his buddies start chowing down on. He notices us staring (And possibly drooling just a little bit) and he throws us their menu and says, "It's only 3 blocks up the street and the sandwiches are great. Just order now. They close in 20 minutes."

The new restaurant is called Barriga Llena, and it is well worth the trip up Aurora to grab one of their Mexican Torta sandwiches - essentially a grilled sandwich will all kinds of good stuff inside.
So, after barely reading the menu we call and order a "Barrigona" and a "Toluquena". The Barrigona turns out to be breaded steak, chorizo, pork leg(think hot dog), sausage and cheese. That does sound a bit filthy, but wow is it tasty. The Toluquena is carne asada and chorizo - also awesome.
Both sandwiches came with tomatoes, lettuce and avocado. The tortas are a meal in themselves, and they need no chips or anything to go along with it.

Now a testament to how cool the owners are - we had no cash and planned on paying with our card. It turns out they are cash only, but they were kind enough to let us come back the next day and pay. That is something you do not see every day. Of course, the sandwiches are so good that we had to order a couple more when we came back to bring them the money for the first two sandwiches. Their ploy of kindness worked out nicely.

We can't say enough about how much this Seattlest and his girlfriend enjoyed this place. There is a good possibility that we will be ordering take-out from here every time we head up to Uber.

I have actually gone to Federal Way just to eat at this place a couple of times. Duck Island and Uber Tavern are two of my favorite bars. Instead of driving to Federal Way, I can walk a few blocks on Aurora between pints...good news.

What's up with the big boobied lady in the upper part of the website?

OH Spanglanders! You will never cease to be hilarante.

Might tortas be a Spanish euphemism for boobies?

I don't know enought colloquial Spanish to say for sure.

Went to this place yesterday on your rec.

Good stuff.

I did get the Barrigona, and it was good, but I think I'm going to try the Caribena next time. The sweetness of the pineapple will be a good addition, I think. My friend is looking forward to the Chorizo and Egg, one.

Took your advice and brought a couple of tortas over to Uber. Mmmm Mmmm good. The pineapple is indeed a nice addition (to several of their offerings), and the side of chipotles sauce is awesome. I think I've found a new ritual. Can't wait to try some of the other varieties.

The decor of the place is actually pretty cool, too. Lots of pics from Mexico City, and the tables were all handmade in a variety of local themes. Loved it.
