Fremont Bridge Is So Stuck Up

z070205twilightzone_nightmare.jpg

hello seattlest,
why does the bridge (that they just fixed) in fremont keep getting stuck. happened last night and is happening right now.
-jay

Yes, Jay, we know exactly why the Fremont Bridge has been routinely getting stuck. Gremlins. They're also in our voter initiative process, if you weren't already aware. We'd make an LOLCat style graphic to that affect ("im in ur brij"), but we don't really have any time right now and we're kinda sick of the 'cats.

Also, we don't actually know why the bridge is getting stuck, but maybe a reader does.

  • Traffic all around has been taking forever this week. I've been attempting to get to and from the airport via the 194 twice this week. Both times the round trip took me 3 hours..... THREE HOURS!

Also, the friggin' Waterfront "Street Car" was late yesterday.

Traffic on 2nd was backed up to Battery yesterday; solid as a rock.

This morning, 4th Ave was closed and nobody told the Metro.

And I'm pretty sure all the roads in Georgetown just vanished for 2 hours on Monday.

The work on the Fremont Bridge continues, guest. It is largely only the visible parts (approaches and roadway) that are finished. The final phase of the (re)construction is happening "down below" on the actual machinery of the bridge. You'll notice that they still schedule periodic overnight closures and re-routes.

Don't know what time Jay noticed the bridge being stuck, but this might be the explanation (from SDOT):

"Beginning Tuesday, July 17th and the majority of the time until the

project is completed early next year, three bridge openings will take 15

minutes, instead of the usual 3 to 5 minutes. These longer openings will

    take place at 5 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 11 p.m. Drivers headed over the

Fremont Bridge may want to schedule their trips accordingly, or take an

alternate route at these times. These longer openings are due to opening

both halves of the bridge using a temporary winch. For other openings,

only one half of the bridge will open at a time."
