In an interview that will air tonight after the M's game, Ken Griffey, Jr. tells FSN that he wants to retire as a Mariner:
Would I [come back]? Yeah. For the simple reason that this is the place where I grew up. And I think I owe it to the people of Seattle and to myself to retire as a Mariner. They showed this excerpt just before the bottom of the fourth. Says Dave Sims: "You'll hear a lot of people getting short of breath hearing that one." Count us as among those. Honestly, we can't think of a single thing non-personal thing that would make us happier than Ken Griffey Jr. coming back to Seattle. We'd be smiling for days.
You have to think that the overwhelmingly positive reception M's fans gave him Friday night had more than a little to do with it. Yay us!
It will be interesting to see how Cincinnati fans react to this...our guess is not well.

As a long time Cincinnati fan, I would be very happy to see JR retire as a Mariner and I think most Reds fans would agree. I loved that I got the chance to see him in a Reds uniform the last several years but obviously it hasn't worked out as well as anyone would have liked for health reasons. He is having a great year this year and still has a good 3-4 years left in him. He deserves the chance to retire in the city where he was adored and spent his happiest years. I think for Mariners fans it would be like when Pete Rose came back to play for the Reds after leaving. I also think Griffey should go into the HOF with a Mariners cap.
I'd love to see Griffey come back. And how cool would it be if Ichiro was still here? Damn.
