160 Beers on Tap - So What?

Beer%20Generic.jpg

Seattlest decided to check out the new Tap House Grill yesterday evening. They opened earlier this week in the old Planet Hollywood location right next to Fox Sports Grill, on 6th Ave. between Pike and Pine.

No matter what you think about the place, they do have an impressive amount of beer.
The wall behind the bar is lined with 160 taps. They offer a solid selection of local beers mixed with offerings from around the world. If someone is coming to visit from out of town and wants to try a large variety of local beer in one place, you really couldn’t do much better.
But, locals and beer nerds will not find anything all that exciting. Most of the beers on offer are the “standard” beer from the brewer represented. They could do so much better with 160 taps.

The first beer we ordered was a Walking Man IPA. It cost $6, which is just ridiculous. The average price seems to be about $5 to $6 for a typical microbrew there, which is too expensive (Even for downtown). We didn't even venture to ask how much their Belgian beers are. They don't list beer prices on the menu.
Thankfully, they left one of our beers off the bill by mistake. We were not about to correct them on it.

For our second beer, we requested a schooner (Smaller than a pint) of Baron Schwarzbier. The bartender responded that they do not offer schooners. Huh? Any respectable beer bar in this city should give you the choice of getting a schooner. When we are at a beer bar with a huge selection, we want to try a large variety. Smaller beers, at a smaller price, allow that. They do have sampler trays where you pick a few beers, but we are not sure how much that costs.

All that said, we may venture into this place every now and then when in the middle of downtown. Plenty of plasma TVs for the games(BUT THEY DIDN"T HAVE THE MARINERS GAME ON, WTF IS WRONG WITH SPORTS BARS IN THIS TOWN? YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO ASK...).
They also have a pretty decent happy hour food menu that is cheap.

Overall, this place will be a hit with tourists and people that don't care that they are overpaying for beer. There are so many better options in this town though. We’d take the 10 minute walk down to The Collins Pub over this place any day; they do more with 20 taps than this place does with 160.

Geoff: Wish I'd read this sooner. I was at Collins on Saturday. By the way, I enjoy your beer-related posts on the blog. If you're interested, I keep a beer blog call Beer Retard that you can Google and check out.

Going to the Uber 1-year anniversary on Wednesday? Some rare beers at that one.

socialretard: If you are a fan of Hair of the Dog Fred, you should go grab a bottle of Fred From the Wood at Collins while they still have a few. $10/12 oz. bottle...but well worth it. Collins was the only place in the country that I've heard of selling it to the public at a bar. It is a small batch of the normal Fred that was aged in oak barrels ....and it rocks.

That sucks that Collins got rid of happy hour. I'm never down there in time to make happy hour, but it sucks anyways.

Paul: completely agree. I've sent back 3 beers for being "off" in 4 trips to the Bellevue location.

The happy hour food is good though and cheap. Collins got rid of happy hour.

Good luck making sure all 160 of them have enough turnover to remain fresh. And why is more necessarily better? Gimme a place with 4-6 choices, and make sure they're all good. That shows care and dedication to serving good beer. 160 brews on tap just shows a fat line of credit.

They also have exactly ONE Asian beer. That's pretty world-spanning, isn't it?

  • justin

that's ok. the mariners are gay.

$6 for a pint? That's just sad. I was planning to make it down there, but I'm not paying that much for a beer. Any beer. I'll stick with my 20 oz. mug at Hale's for less than $5.

Completely agree with your assessment of this place. The only thing that will keep me coming back occasionally is that they do have a couple beers that I never see at Collins (Hair of the Dog Fred).
