For Your Consideration: This Week at SIFF

siff.jpg

Sniff sniff, single tear. It's the last full week of SIFF, so you're well approaching your last chance till next year to take in some of that sweet filmy goodness. SIFF's not just movies; this week offers both the Opticlash 2 VJ battle at the CHAC and the Face the Music party at Neumo's, the latter of which includes performances by Viva Voce, Jesse Sykes, and Siberian. Tickets for both are going fast!

Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing this week:

· Ballet Russes Peter Boals, artistic director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet introduces this homage to early 20th century Parisian ballet. (tonight, 6:30pm @ Harvard Exit)

· The Damned Don't Cry But they do look fabulous. Check out Joan Crawford in this film noir about a housewife who rises to the upper class by any means necessary. (tonight, 9:15pm @ SIFF Cinema)

· Out of Time This charming Austrian documentary follows four old school businesses who seem to exist in a world far removed from our modern consumer realities. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Pacific Place; Wednesday, 2pm @ Pacific Place)

· Shotgun Stories Like Crime and Punishment, but in Arkansas. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Harvard Exit; Wednesday, 4:30pm @ Harvard Exit)

· The Banquet Like Hamlet, but in China. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Lincoln Square)

· Delirious Steve Buscemi as a paparazzi photog? More satire please! (tomorrow, 6:30pm @ the Neptune; Saturday, 4pm @ the Egyptian)

· Opera Jawa This Indonesian gamelan-themed opera is quite possibly the most unique film showing at SIFF this year. (tomorrow, 6:30pm @ SIFF Cinema; Wednesday, 4pm @ SIFF Cinema)

· Dry Season The complex aftermath of Chad's forty-year-long civil war is examined in this political drama from writer-director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. (tomorrow, 9:30pm @ SIFF Cinema; Thursday, 4pm @ Lincoln Square)

· I Really Hate My Job Who hasn't uttered that line? Given the plot (five women hurriedly prepare their down-on-its-luck restaurant for the arrival of a famous actor), it sounds suspiciously like Big Night with chicks. (Wednesday, 7pm @ the Egyptian; Friday, 9:30pm @ Lincoln Square)

· A Cottage on Dartmoor Another noir, this time with live piano accompaniment from Donald Sosin in his third SIFF appearance. (Wednesday, 7:30pm @ SIFF Cinema)

· Cthulhu Filmed in Seattle and Astoria, OR, this H.P. Lovecraft-inspired mystery also features the "acting" "skills" of Tori Spelling. (Thursday, 6:30pm @ the Neptune; Sunday, 4pm @ the Neptune)

· Lovely By Surprise What started as a series of web shorts is now a just-completed full-length dark comedy, in which a writer's attempt to kill her protagonist results in him escaping from her novel. (Thursday, 9:30pm @ Harvard Exit; Saturday, 11am @ Harvard Exit)

· Blood on the Flat Track: The Rise of the Rat City Rollergirls This doc shows how the ladies got their wheels. (Thursday, 9:30pm @ the Neptune; Saturday, 1:30pm @ the Neptune)
