Don Your Mullet and Take Daddy to the Zoo: Indigo Girls This Sunday!

Oh yes, Seattlest fans, it's that time of year again. When, after weeks of teasing, the sun finally decides to stick around. When all able-bodied gay men head to Madison Beach in their tight little shorts with their cute little dogs, and all the able-bodied lesbians head to some outdoor location with their picnic blankets and their mullets for an Indigo Girls concert.

Ever since the children of Fremont decided they hate the rest of us, the I-Girls have been playing at the zoo, which is fine. Nobody loves little furry animals quite like a bunch of lesbians. Besides, the Zoo Tunes shows end hella early, so we can all get a head start on our Sunday evening nesting activities.

In case you're not a lesbian, or you've been living in a hole for the past few years, the Indigo Girls haven't changed a whole lot since what could probably be considered their "brightest" moment. Around the "peak" of their popularity with Swamp Ophelia, the girls took a little time off, and Amy Ray asserted her rock and roll angst on a few solo efforts. Since then, their styles have diverged, with most of their albums feeling more like a musical tennis match than a collaboration.

Nonetheless, their work as a duo strikes a great even balance, intersplicing Ray's raucous rock anthems with Emily Saliers' quiet, cancerian philosophizing. Their latest album--last year's Despite Our Differences--is a great example of that. There's nothing shocking and new about the Indigo Girls these days, but who cares? They've crossed that line into territory where it's just good if it's reliable. If you ask us, being able to rely on sweet contrapuntal harmonies really is enough to make a ticket to their live show well worth it. Let's not forget that they can actually seriously play their instruments, which include guitar, mandolin and banjo. Nowadays, their shows have evolved into more of a community event than a rock show, which is nice too.

That this year's show falls on Father's Day is just random enough to mention. Unfortunately, tickets are sold out for this Sunday, so you're out of luck if you've procrastinated this long. No need to worry, though. Surely they'll be back next year.
