For Your Consideration: This Weekend at SIFF

We are, in fact, over half-way there, and yet we continue to live on a prayer--a prayer that the latter half of SIFF contains nearly as many fine films as what's been shown thus far. Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing this weekend:

· Children of the War We've heard good things about this powerful documentary on the Mara Salvatrucha (also known as MS-13), the biggest and baddest street gang in the world. (tonight, 7pm @ Harvard Exit; Saturday June 16th, 4pm @ Harvard Exit)

· Broken English We totally fell in love with this Zoe Cassevetes-directed, Parker Posey-starring cross-cultural romantic comedy. (tonight, 9:15pm @ the Egyptian; Sunday, 6:30pm @ Lincoln Square)

· The Pervert's Guide to Cinema How can you not be enticed by a film with that title? Allow philosopher/postmodernist/psychoanalyst/culture maven Slavoj Žižek take you on a tour through films of desire. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Harvard Exit; tomorrow, 11am @ the Egyptian)

· Day Watch The second film in the visually-challenging Russian fantasy trilogy about the epic battle between good and evil. (tonight, 9:30pm @ the Neptune; Sunday, 9:15pm @ Lincoln Square)

· Retribution Attention, Japanese horror fans: Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Pulse) is back, and his new one's got a detective investigating a murder where he seems to be the most likely suspect. (tonight, 9:30pm @ Pacific Place; Sunday, 3:45pm @ Lincoln Square)

· Soldiers of Conscience It's hard being in the military when you don't believe in violence. (tomorrow, 1:30pm @ Harvard Exit)

· Great World of Sound Some critics at Sundance called this winning debut the most honest look at the music biz they'd ever seen. It's no American Idol, but it does follow two record label scouts as they traverse the country trying to find undiscovered talent. (tomorrow, 6:15pm @ Harvard Exit; Sunday, 1:30pm @ the Egyptian)

· The Boss of It All This week's gala film is the unexpectedly light-hearted office comedy from (of all people) Danish meanie Lars Von Trier. (tomorrow, 7pm @ the Egyptian; Wednesday June 13th, 7pm @ Lincoln Square)

· Bad Faith Guess Who's Coming to Dinner-like wackiness ensues when a good Jewish girl gets knocked up by her Muslim boyfriend. (tomorrow, 9:30 @ the Neptune)

· A Secret Genocide Ethnic cleansing is way sexy when it's kept on the downlow, like what's happening to the Karen people, a minority in Burma and Thailand. (Sunday, 11am @ Harvard Exit)

· TEKKONKINKREET No clue what the all-caps title means, but this anime (from a producer of The Animatrix) follows the attempts of two kids to spare Treasure City from destruction at the hands of a ruthless yakuza. (Sunday, 9:30pm @ the Egyptian)
