Apparently, there's some other annual festival this weekend besides Sasquatch. That's right, Memorial Day also hearkens the return of Folklife, Seattle's hippiest fest, held every year at Seattle Center. Local singer-songwriter/friend of Seattlest Ali Marcus will be playing the festival (Sunday, 4pm at Cafe Impromptu in McCaw Hall), so we turned to her for an expert opinion on what's worth your time this weekend, besides hackysack and drum circle. Seattlest Kim's already given you her picks, but if you're looking for a few more options this weekend, Ali's selections are listed below.
FRIDAY MAY 25
- 1:05 - Kristin Connell - Fisher Green Stage
A sure-voiced singer/songwriter, Kristin Connell weaves tales that draw you in and stir your thoughts. She sings with a sweet voice that is direct and filled with emotion.
- 8:15 - Conrad Ford - Fisher Green Stage
Conrad Ford is a country band masquerading as indie rock--in other words, they are one of the crossover types who are introducing a certain kind of audience to a certain kind of music. Let this music be heard! It's rough, blunt vocals, introspective observations, and shimmering steel guitar.
SATURDAY MAY 26
- 11:00 - Handsome International Man - Bagley Lawn Acoustic Stage
Mike McCown is a thoughtful humorist. His songs keep you rolling in laughter but always
with a deeper meaning. This performance will also feature a handful of tremendously talented
accompanying musicians (Jay Thompson, Caitlin Rippey and Kristy Cameron) on other instruments and with chilling harmony.
- 7:00 - Ghost Story Concert - Center House Theater
How could this *not* be amazing?!
SUNDAY MAY 27
- 12:55 - Cross-Eyed Rosie - Fisher Green Stage
This is a country band from Portland that comes highly recommended from pretty much anyone who's ever heard them.
- 5:00 - String Band Scramble - Fisher Green Stage
Again, how could this *not* be a rollicking good time?
(sign up at the stage from 1-4PM)
MONDAY MAY 28
- 2:10 - Jerin Falkner - Fisher Green Stage
Jerin Falkner sings with a scratchy, low voice that flutters just like your heartstrings themselves as you listen. Her songs are vulnerable, put right out in front of you to knock you senseless.
- 2:50 - Slimpickins - Fisher Green Stage
Slimpickins is a local old-time group who will bring you to your feet, smiling. They have a song called "Funky Butt."
- 5:00 - Bellydance From Folklore to Fusion - International Dance Stage
And again...what other opportunity will there ever be...?
