<description>&lt;p&gt;Having grown up in Olympia, I&apos;m not terribly surprised about the rain thing.  Remember, you guys in the Emerald City get some rain-shadow protection from the Olympics.  All that&apos;s to the west of Olympia is the Chehalis River valley, so the storms come barrelling right in at us from the coast.

As the article notes, Seattle averages around 40 inches of rain per year, Olympia around 50.  I remember one year when we got 65.  We also took the cake for the highest average number of rainy days in a year.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
