Save the World: Drink Organic Beer

organic.beer.jpg

KING 5 did a great job with a story about the growing demand for organic beer.

One of the best points of the story is this comment, "While many beer snobs belch at the idea of an organic Budweiser, local brewers are hoping the marketing muscle behind the macro-brewers will further bring organics to the masses."

While we will not touch any organic beer made by Budweiser, becuase it will be just as bad as their other beers, the wide marketing and distribution will do nothing but help local breweries expand their lines of organic beer.

Fish Brewing is the best known local brewery to distribute organic beers. They bottle 3 organic beers for the Seattle area; an Amber, an IPA and a Pale Ale. You can find their beers at Fred Meyer and many convenience stores.

While the Fish organic beers are good, they are not very adventurous. Here are a few of our favorite organic beers available in the PNW:

Bison Organic Chocolate Stout - Bison, out of California, does a great job with this stout. Dark black with lots of roasted malt and chocolate taste. You can get this at Bottleworks. Any of Bison's beers you find are worth a try.

Roots Organic Brewing - One of our favorite brewpubs in the PNW just happens to be entirely organic. 2 former brewers from Rogue and McMenamins are the brains behind the outstanding beers at Roots. Every beer they produce is certified organic. While their IPA is the crowd favorite, their best beer is their Toasted Coconut Porter; it is to die for. Sadly, the porter is only available in the fall.
Although, you will currently have to wait until your next trip to Portland to try their beer, we heard they will eventually start bottling their IPA to send up to us in Seattle. Please hurry.

Elliott Bay Brewing - This West Seattle brewpub uses 100% organic barley for the base malt in all of their house beers. On the next 70 degree day, stop on by for a pint of their Luna Weizen; a light American-style wheat ale.

Organic or not Fish Brewery Beers are damn tasty and overall good.

Love Fish for sure....my favorite of theirs is the non-organic Poseidon's Imperial Stout; I have 1 bottle left of their 2002 barrel aged version that is one of my favorite stouts ever.

Nice brewpub to go visit...
