Brandon is ROY

roy.jpgWonder why we need to spend $100 million to renovate Garfield High? Because Garfield gives the world things like this:

Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy was chosen as the NBA's Rookie of the Year on Wednesday after leading all rookies with averages of 16.8 points, 4.0 assists and 35.4 minutes in 57 games.

The 6-foot-6, 229-pound guard was named the West's Rookie of the Month in January, February and March. He also made the All-Star game's rookie squad. He scored at least 20 points 16 times, including a career-high 29 against Utah on April 4.

Roy received 127 out of a possible 128 first-place votes (638 points) for the award, known as the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

Roy is the first Washington Husky to win the award and the first former Metro Leaguer as well.

Where does this rank among international achievements by Garfield grads? Not as high as you think...

1) Jimi Hendrix--performed most memorable version of National Anthem ever
2) Quincy Jones--produced "Thriller"
3) Joyce Walker--Gold medalist, 1984 Olympics, women's basketball
4) Debbie Armstrong--Gold medalist, giant slalom, 1984 Olympics
5) David Swidler--Ate nine hot dogs during 2006 All-Star Game
6) Brandon Roy--2006-07 NBA Rookie of the Year

Do you know who the ONE voter was the didn't vote for Roy? TORONTO play-by-play guy Chuck Swirsky, who voted for hometown rookie, Andrea Bargnani.

That's a big time BOOOOOOOOO!!!!

blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/huskyhoops/archives/2007/05/02/roy_wins_nba_ro/

Jerry Brewer has a column on this in today's Times--the guy thinks that Bargnani's contribution as the 4th best player on a winning team is more valuable than Roy's as the 2nd best player on a losing team. There's something to that.

But, anyway, who cares, I'm not going to let one Canadian ruin the moment. Bull-DOGS!
