Dikembe Mutombo Back in Our Lives
The only things hotter than Oakland’s NBA team are its freeways [rimshot…crickets].
But seriously folks, the eighth seed Warriors are up three games to one on the number one seed Mavericks in the opening round of the playoffs. Only two eight seeds have ever upset a number one, and if you’re currently driving a pencil into your eye then you probably know the first one.
In 1994 the lowly Nuggets beat the 63-19 Sonics in five games (back in pre-Ross and Rachel times the first round series was best of five). The Nuggets were lead by Dikembe Mutombo who, after the Sonics won the first two games, blocked every shot the rest of the series. Following the series win Mutombo lay on the court holding the ball in the air, in one of the most painful images ever captured on film.
The longer the Warriors/Mavericks series goes the more times this piece of film will be shown. That is why we are begging for the Warriors to end things tonight.
As a side note, we were at the Sonics/Nuggets game, and we will never forget the silence and look of shock of the faces following the final buzzer. No one thought the Sonics would ever lose that game. It was also the last game played at the Seattle Center Coliseum. The building was remodeled and turned into the hellacious, barren, shit hole that the Sonics are currently forced to play in.
Oh, for any of you sadists out there, here is the footage. However, be warned-- one viewing will have you crying on the floor in your break room.
