What's On Tap - Friday April 13, 2007

If you love stouts, like we do, you are going to want to hop in your car/get on the bus/ride your bike up to Uber Tavern in Greenlake for a taste of the 2003 Silver City Imperial Stout.

First off, Uber Tavern is just an amazing beer bar. It has been around less than a year, but has a very strong following among locals and beer nerds. Get there early if you go on a weekend, or stop in during the week. The room is very small and can get cramped, but it is quite cozy if you are there when it is not packed.

Who cares what the place looks like though, they have an outstanding beer selection; even for this town. Take a look at their tap list and bottle selection before you go if you’d like.

The bartenders are all cool as hell too…ask them for suggestions or a taste of something before you try it.

You can also buy any bottle in the cooler to go, or get a jar/growler of beer from their taps to take with you and drink on your couch. Now that is convenience. Their prices are very reasonable as well.

Standouts on tap right now:

Silver City Imperial Stout – 2003 Vintage; This 4 year old vintage has mellowed and has no alcohol burn left for a beer above 9%. Heavenly chocolate, coffee and roasted malt tastes. You've never heard of "vintage" beers? Give it a try. Some beers do indeed get better with age.

Avery Maharaja - If you are a hop-head, like us, you should love this Imperial IPA. Big citrus hop aroma and taste. It is balanced nicely with sweet malt. Avery, from Colorado, is one of the best breweries around these days. Uber is one of the few places to have their products on tap in Seattle.

Walking Man Abbey Rode - This Belgian style Abbey Dubbel from southern Washington is a very drinkable take on the style. It is balanced and crisp, and not too sweet with just enough taste of belgium yeast. Any time you see a Walking Man beer, it is usually worth trying.

Victory Moonglow Weizenbock - This dark amber wheat beer from Pennsylvania has a wonderful fruity/spicy aroma. The taste is very sweet with notes of citrus mixed with dark fruits.

Now get up there and drink some beers!

Great tidbit El Cheapo.. Didn't know they had that agreement. I was wondering if there was any tension, but I guess not!

Great to hear that you guys are enjoying the beer posts...we'll definitely be keeping them up!

Duck Island and Uber are the perfect 1-2 punch for a couple pints....the only problem is, you could easily find enough good stuff to drink at one or the other.

And what can be better than having a huge plate of filthy biscuits and gravy from Beth's with your stout at Duck Island? Yeah, I guess that is kind of disgusting.

We'll definitely be mentioning the Coopers IPA fest...yum.

Is this the place next to the gun shop with the bright neon Uber sign and a banner announcing they rent kegs? I wouldn't have imagined going in there (until my next keg party, which would be... never). Your description makes it sound like a place I'd like, but I remember thinking about how places like that drag down the feeling of a neighborhood.

So to answer your question - Uber should if they ever want me as a customer.

Amen on the beer posts! Uber is a great little place that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned more often. Also try the Duck Island down the street, which has been around a good bit longer, and also has a consistently good selection. They have an understanding about what kinds of beers each will serve, and the two usually have very complementary selections. They also serve food from Beth's (which I'm not sure is really a plus).

Good job highlighting four great breweries with your picks.

I'm flummoxed by the greatness of Silver City, being that the brewpub has all the charm of a strip mall chain restaurant. Their Fat Bastard and all it's variants (la fat, mmm) are incredible and none of the beers in their large lineup are below average.

Please keep writing about beer! Might want to give a shout out when the time comes that Coopers is having an IPA fest the second half of this month (starts sunday).
