New Graduation Requirement: White Guilt 101

John_Denver_Portrait.jpegOver at new Crosscut.com, Knute Berger reports that the Seattle School District will send four local high schoolers to the White Privilege Conference in Colorado Springs.

Hoorah! We can think of no better place than Colorado Springs to teach all about the wonders of white privilege--proximity to ski resorts, an overwhelmingly melanin-free population, an outsized number of John Denver fans to convey the magic that is singing-songwriting...wait, what's that?

the goal of the gathering is to make people more aware of the "negative historical implications of 'Whiteness,'" to "difuse [sic] the destructive power" of whiteness, and to encourage students to become "champions" of social justice and change.
God dammit. There are going to be some insufferable valedictory speeches this spring, we can promise you that.

Not to be all like angry libertarian white guy here, but seriously, don't schools really teach things anymore? I mean, however you feel about the conference's goals, this just seems to be another example of schools sacrificing scholarship in the name of political action. Seth, I'm less concerned these kids are going to grow up to be a new generation of NPR listeners as I am that they're going to grow up to be another bunch of self-righteous, uninformed hippies repeating politically correct slogans like mantras, without the education or intellect to tackle the really serious issues of endemic poverty, inaccess to health care, global warming, and the host of other challenging issues that someone's going to have to work to solve. Mantras don't fix anything.

To the contrary, I know from first hand experience that Colorado Springs is a hot bed for white supremacists/neo-nazi types so this actually makes for a perhaps unintentionally hilarious ironic setting.
