Mariners/Indians Postponed Again
Yet another postponement, and the new plan is to try to play a doubleheader on Monday, beginning at 10:05 am PST. The M's have a day game in Boston on Tuesday, so this would mean they'd play 3 games in about 28 hours. Not good.
Even if they play both games on Monday, that leaves two games that will need to be played sometime during the season. The P-I's John Hickey has the scoop on that:
Part of the problem is that this series, the first of the year away from Safeco Field for Seattle, is the only time all season the Mariners are scheduled to come to Cleveland. There is the possibility of playing some of the games as add-ons when Cleveland comes to town and the possibility of a quick return trip to Cleveland between series on the road, say on Sept. 6, when both clubs are off and the Mariners are scheduled to have a day off between series in Yankee Stadium with New York and in Comerica Park with Detroit.
The trouble with playing those games in Safeco is that the Indians don't come until the final week of the season, and with both clubs at this point at least nominally having a chance to be in the pennant race, no one wants to see either the American League West or Central races (or both) decided because these clubs had to play a couple of doubleheaders in a row the final week of the season.
You can watch a time-lapse of the opening day nuttiness at Jacobs Field here.
In other news:
--The Clippers signed Will Conroy for the rest of the season, which could mean playoffs. The Clips are one game ahead of the Warriors for the 8th spot in the West.
--The Thunderbirds lost game two of their Western Conference semifinals series vs. Vancouver. The series is tied 1-1. Game 3 is Tuesday at 7:05 at Key Arena.
--Brandon Roy's knee has been bothering him, so the Blazers sat him out against the Mavs. Without Roy, Randolph, or Alridge, the Blazers lost. This is getting silly; every team that's out of the playoffs is clearly tanking. We suspect the NBA will change the lottery system this offseason.
--John Lackey gave up one run in seven innings, Vlad Guerrero drove in his MLB-leading 10th run of the season, and the Angels went to 5-1 with a 2-1 victory over the A's.
