Tuesday Night Cagematch: Peachcake vs. Ratatat

...in which we pit two bands against each other, to better determine how you should spend your Tuesday night.

Weight: 200 lbs soaking wet
Hometown: Phoenix

Peachcake is composed of Stefan Pruett and John O'Keefe, two enthusiastic Arizona kids who like to dress up and make sunny electro-dance rock. Their debut full-length won't be out until this summer, but what we've heard of it is upbeat synthy pop songs with completely non sequitur titles like "Did I Just Do That or Was It Jim Carrey?" and "Stop Acting Like You Know More about the Internet Cafe Than Me." Think the Postal Service with a sense of humor, a lot more ass-shaking, and a lot fewer hokey lyrics (btw: the secret to having such song titles? they must never be used as lyrics in said song). The word is that their live show is an experience full of costume changes, video projectors, party toys, beachballs, board games, and people dressed as tigers. For more evidence, check out the photos from one of their ridiculous sets at SXSW.

And in this corner: Ratatat
Weight: 200 lbs soaking wet
Hometown: Brooklyn

Ratatat is also composed of two scrawny boys (Evan Mast and Mike Stroud) who make electro-dance-rock, but unlike Peachcake, their variety includes live instruments and hip-hop leanings. Their self-titled first album and their second release, Classics, both feature instrumentals with a funky retro feel, courtesy of 70s metal guitars coupled with synth hooks and dance-ready drum samples. On this tour, they've been playing with a couple other musicians who broaden their sound with additional instrumentation. Last time they were in town, they played at El Corazon (precisely why we didn't go), but you can catch nearly the entire show care of one dude's series of YouTube videos. The below vid is part II of the series.

8pm doors // 925 E Pine St // $13, all ages balcony

Predicted winner: Peachcake, due to the high likelihood of a crazy set with lots of dancing.
