Winona State, We Are Sorry

chickensoupsportsfansoul.jpgThis morning as we were preparing for another exciting day of basketball, we were thinking back to one year ago this Saturday, when we still reeling from the most painful loss our sports fan lookin' balls had ever seen. It was about then when we caught the end of the Division II Championship Game-- Barton vs. Winona State. Hey, we live on Winona Ave. Go Winona State!

That was the kiss of death for the Warriors.

Up five (74-69) and shooting free throws with 35.5 seconds left, here is what happened:

35.5: Missed Winona St. free throw
35.2: Barton rebound
25.2: Barton jumper (74-71, Winona)
25.4: Barton steals the Winona inbound
22.2: Barton lay-in, and the foul (74-73, Winona)
22.2: Barton missed free throw
21.1: Winona rebound
19.4: Barton foul
19.4: Winona hits one of two
7.9: Barton reverse lay-in (75-75, Tie)
4.0: Winona drives down court to take the winning shot, Barton steals the ball.
0.2: Barton all alone up court, hits winning lay-in (79-77, Barton)
0.0: Barton is your Div. II National Champion.

It was the most amazing ending to basketball game we have ever seen.

When will we learn?

I don't follow basketball at all, pro or college, but I was on the phone so I sat down and idly turned on the TV (muted) and literally caught the last minute of that game. I'd never heard of either school, and I didn't realize it was a championship game until later, but nevertheless I blurted into the phone "Holy crap, did that just happen?"

That was, without a doubt, the greatest ending to a sports game I have ever witnessed. You neglected to mention that Anthony Atkinson, who must check in at all of 5'7", scored 10 points in the final 40 seconds for Barton. God. Damn.
