Fujiya & Miyagi Play Chop Suey Tomorrow (Early)
Chop Suey has an odd pair of shows for tomorrow. The night closes out with house music provided by Justin Martin (one of the best shows of 2006) and Johnny Fiasco (he's respected, but he hasn't done much for us lately), but earlier in the evening there's Fujiya and Miyagi. We know right now you're likely asking "Who?," so we'll explain.
First off, the band is British, not Japanese. "Fujiya" is actually Steve who plays synths and does backing vocals, and "Miyagi" is David, and he plays guitar and sings. There's also a bassist (named Matt if you must know). The band's been around since 200, but it's only in recent years when they've really started to rise from obscurity (an 8.3 from Pitchfork will do that). The group garners plenty of comparisons (Can, Neu!, Air), but what you really need to know is that the album combines funky basslines and guitar licks with some great synth work, leading to an album that sounds incredibly European, but has pretty universal appeal. See the video below as proof.
