The WCC Won't Take Seattle U. for Basketball

sulogo.jpgWe were jazzed, and, it appears, overly optimistic, when we heard Seattle U might go D1 in basketball again.

Having two Seattle colleges in Division 1 b-ball looks less likely, or at least less likely to happen soon, now that the West Coast Conference has decided not to expand.

The WCC--the one Gonzaga and U of P are in--seemed like a perfect fit for Seattle U: Most of the schools are Catholic ones, like Seattle U is, and the conference gets national TV time on ESPN.

The next obvious choice would be the less-glamorous Big Sky Conference (Eastern Washington, Portland State, etc). However, Big Sky schools play football, which Seattle U probably doesn't want to do.

The Times reports that the school will decide this May whether to try to go Division 1.

This was spearheaded by Gonzaga who want absolutely nothing to do with Seattle U being a division I program, and want even less to do with them in their own conference.

I think they'll take another whack at convincing the WCC, and then probably pop up in the Big West Conference.
