Our Orienteering Skills Fail Us in Queen Anne

japanese.jpgLast night we cracked a beer at home and flipped back and forth between Spiderman 2 and some Roethke biography on KCTS. That wasn't what we were supposed to be doing. We were supposed to be seeing Sexual Practices of the Japanese at On the Boards, but we couldn't find the theater, despite a hand drawn map. No, we've never been to On the Boards before. Neither has anyone in Queen Anne, apparently, nor have they ever heard of it. Is it a bar? No, it's a theater. The theaters are over there. We know where the fucking theaters are, we don't know where On the Boards is. Can't help you. And we doubt we ever will make it to On the Boards, because while we're sure it's a fine theater with lots of fantastic productions it remains in Queen Anne, and Queen Anne fucking sucks. We used to think there was very little that made a trip there worthwhile, but we're ready to concede that absolutely nothing is worth the effort there. Hey, you don't have to blame the neighborhood for our inability to work a map, though, so you might want to check out Sexual Practices of the Japanese. A portion of it involves Ichiro and it plays through Saturday.

In the fresh light of a new week, of course I have nothing against LQA. I was frustrated by a Sonics game that seemed to stand between me and my destination.

    hey dave F,

you might try learning how to read a map yerself.

Counterbalance [pocket] Park is a block away from On the Boards (the building used to house ACT before they moved to Eagles Auditorium downtown).

Yeah, it looks like crap now -- but better the hope of something nice than another friggin' condo.

    LQA kicks ass!

Upper Queen Anne is nice if you like boring rich people and mostly boring food. Lower Queen Anne is gritty! We got character AND class! Don't knock my neighborhood, The Seattlest...I like reading you.

You missed a real treat right next to the theater -- a gravel-filled vacant lot with a sign proclaiming it "Counterbalance Park - An Urban Oasis."

Upper Queen Anne seems nice. Lower Queen Anne, where you were...well...

Yep, it’s at the foot of the hill, in the sticks a couple of blocks north of Easy Street, a couple more from Dick’s.

Folks who have no clue what Queen Anne Hill includes saying "Queen Anne sucks". Fuckin' classy, guys. Keep it up.

It's on Roy, not far from the former Larry's Market. It's not even on Queen Anne, unless you extend the hill to include everything at its foot. Some people call it "uptown." I don't, and I've lived there for six years. I call it "home" when I'm not calling it "the region between Belltown and Queen Anne."

It's easy to get there. First, find Mercer. Then head one block hill-wards, and you'll be on Roy. There's nothing on Roy except for some residential units, a bicycle shop, and "On the Boards." Pretty impossible to miss once you're there.

  • Or a new car with a navigation system built in.

You need to get Google Maps on your phone.
