The Engrossing Story of the 1986-87 Sonics

auerbach_mask.jpgOver at Supersonics.com, Kevin Pelton's compiled a fascinating oral history of the 1986-87 Sonics. We tipped True Hoop to it, because they'll run anything NBA-related, but we hadn't yet read it for ourselves. Turns out it's really fascinating and worth a look if you're a Seattle basketball fan of a certain age. Learn the answers to these compelling questions:

--Why did the Sonics play a playoff series in Hec Ed Pavilion?

--Why did Xavier McDaniel want to punch Red Auerbach in the face?

--Why, in the first round series against Dallas, did the Sonics put their worst defensive player on the Mavericks' best scorer, and why did it work?

--Why did vets Maurice Lucas and Clem Johnson start fights with Tom Chambers and Alton Lister?

We're so bummed that all this Sonics history will just sort of stop when they move. Then again, the Sonics become sort of like a presidential administration--picked over, analyzed, debated--for all time. Maybe they can get their own library where the team store is now.
