Seattlest is going to see a show tonight at the Showbox. It's Of Montreal which has been around forever, it seems, but is currently rising to the point that they're selling out the Showbox. It's also The Blow from Portland and Aqueduct from here. Of Montreal is a kind of guitar disco dirty pop thing - We've been listening to Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and we can see why tickets are available through Craigslist and not TicketsWest. They also have a weird schtick going on and have really wordy album titles (Horse & Elephant Eatery (No Elephants Allowed); Deflated Chime, Foals Slightly Flower Sibylline Responses) which we're usually suckers for. Despite it being about the music, of course.
However, if we weren't going to this show tonight, we'd be headed for The Shanty Tavern on Lake City Way where Mama Tried is playing. Mama Tried is a Merle Haggard tribute band (Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied). The Weekly's got an interview with a member of the band in the current issue. We'd go see that in a heartbeat because what we'd really rather be doing is sitting at home tonight and dreaming of the show that's coming up this Sunday: Merle Haggard himself and Neko Case at the Paramount. It is a crime against music that those tickets are still available at $44.50 (+$2.50 +$9.30).
The point of this was supposed to be that it's sold out and we don't have a ticket so we can't go. The fact that they're still for sale kind of throws our weekend for a loop.
From a family, meek and mild:
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.
Despite all my Sunday learning,
Towards the bad, I kept on turning.
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.
And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.

with the exception of the girl in search of mancandy, it looks like craigslist is all people trying to buy tickets to of Montreal.
is the crime against music that Neko Case tickets are going for well over $50?
if you go back through of montreal's early catalog, you'll find bouncy, lo-fi, twee-pop. it's only the last couple of years that kevin has added the glam aspect. whether or not that has something to do with their rise in popularity is an interesting question.
i would definitely be seeing neko sunday night if tix weren't $50. i'm sure merle puts on a great show, but not at that price. i think it's a crime that neko is following this with a solo tour (with eric bachmann opening) that hits vancouver, bellingham, and portland - no seattle date.
Yeah, 56 bucks to see Neko is WAY more than my tolerance level for high priced shows go.
I have a feeling it isn't gonna sell out at that price.
56 bucks isn't very "punk"
