An Engineering Marvel

The title does not refer to the Spokane Street Bridge that "Really Big Things" on the Discovery Channel just featured. Although that was cool.

Anonymous tip:

KIRO TV built a new parking lot, on the corner of Broad St and 3rd Ave in Bell Town. Look real close at this picture and see if you can figure out what has us all laughing.

The building that was there was a 50's era two story building. It was not cost effective to upgrade ro remodel the building. The building had been empty for nearly a decade with one non profit using a part of the first flor for about 1 year. The parking lot is laid out so the news vehicles can back into their slots and plug in to the electrical outlets you cannot see on this picture. It may look like a goof but it was planned this way. None the less, without that knowledge you'd be left wondering...

i figured it out from the name the picture is under in the uploaders file its called mini-parking fun the parking spots on the right are very small asking for cars smaller than a mini car. it could be an optical illusion.

A 50-60's era(?) building covering just over half the lot area that wasn't getting much use these days. The last tenant I can recall was some kind of non-profit that either folded or moved. While reversing into the slots seems kind of weird it looks like it can work (I bet "compacts only" in a number of the slots).

Isn't a corner in Belltown too valuable these days to be wasted on a new parking lot? What was there before?

Isn't that the corner of Second and Broad in Bell Town?

There's one yellow cone on the far left, about a third of the way up. Who let that happen?

  • Andrew Davis

    Oops, sorry for the double.

Even if the circulation of the aisle on the left went the other way, the far right parking lanes are also pointed the wrong way.

I think they have the circulation wrong, as well as the lanes on the far right flipped. Or there isn't supposed to be any circular movement, and the two lanes on the left and the one on the far right are wrong. In either case, it's all messed up. And they're really small parking spots, as that truck doesn't seem like it could fit, even if it were parked correctly.

No, this is clearly a contractor (or engineer) mistake. I work for a Civil firm downtown and can tell you the circulation of the aisle on the left is supposed to be going the other direction.

Just in that one row, though.

  • Maybe they want all the cars to back into their spots. Duh!

The arrows sending cars into one another? More importantly, if anyone spots a black Accord ('94) with plate 842-GYG anywhere please email me. It was stolen from Capitol Hill (19th/Republican) this morning and I want it back. (has huge scratches on both sides) Thanks! Elise
