Cabin In The Woods Badly Needs A Good PR Guy

AlkiCabin.JPGStriking out on one's own and carving a living from the breast of the land was once the mark of an American hero. The colonists, the homesteaders, the gold rushers, even, are mythological giants without which our country would have no identity, no past. Our city in particular was an outpost of these kinds of guys, scratching sustenance from a far and isolated territory.

Today, if you live in the woods you're a wacko.

We're talking about this guy, the suspected rapist, who was found in an underground bunker in the woods outside of Olympia. He fits the description of a man who raped an 11-year-old girl in the area and he has been arrested for that crime. The last, most famous hidey-holer was the Unabomber. The cabin in the woods --what was once the square and contemplative domain of that guy from PBS, Thoreau and Mossback, even-- is now connected to terrorists, rapists, squalor and deprivation. Thanks, guys.

You can see some photos and video of the alleged rapist's hidey-hole here.

Um, wasn't the late Saddam the most recent "most famous hidey-holer"?

The word choice "hidey-hole" was meant to be a nod to Saddam, but since he wasn't an American I didn't mention him specifically. You're right, though, Saddam's capture definitely colors hidey-holers from here out.
