Only Crime @ Studio Seven
Seattlest was holding it down on a Tuesday night as we headed to SODO to catch a local all ages show at Studio Seven. Anyone see the flyer for this show? We seem to remember a picture of someone sticking a needle in someone else's eye. It's so punk rock though, we went with it. 5 punk/hardcore bands on a Tuesday night has to be a good thing. Oh you didn't know? Seattlest has been holding back, but we can bring the rock. Hell, we even know the difference between punk and hardcore. But, in typical Seattle fashion, we missed the opener and only caught the last couple songs from the 2nd band Marginal Way; but that left the other 3 with our full attention. First up were one of the local hardcore bands we were there to see: Shook Ones. We first saw this band playing a basement in Bellingham so it was cool to see them progressing and playing on a big stage with some national acts. We enjoyed their set, but they were noticeably less "shooken" than we remember. With all that space we expected to see people flying around, but what we got instead were bad stage antics, long delays between songs, and people falling down while singing. Yes we enjoyed the music, love the new CD blah, blah, blah, but you get our drift. Bass player is ridiculous. More after the break....
Next up were a band we had never heard of: New Mexican Distater Squad. This is how it's done, boys. All the way from Orlando, Florida - and because we've never heard of them before - when they claimed they were the best band in Orlando, we had to go with it. They even reminded us of the geographical proximity between our two cities, so they definitely get extra credit in our book. They sounded like old school D.C. punk and bands we used to listen to in high school like Dag Nasty and Minor Threat. These guys could do a wicked D.R.I. cover. And finally headliner Only Crime took the stage and played songs from their newly released album Virulence and some old material. We caught them last year when they played El Corazon and the new material sounded great with this veteran crew of punk legends. It was funny to see the progression in ages as the bands played. Only Crime were clearly the founding fathers of the evening but definitely rocked harder than anyone else. They ended their blazing fast set by leaving the stage one band member at a time until the only person left was drummer Bill Stevenson banging out the last few beats to an applauding crowd. They came back on for a 2 song encore and put a cap on what we would consider a damn cool show for a low-key Tuesday. Tuesday...the new Thursday?
