The first time we saw Brandon Roy dribble a basketball, we knew he was going to be the first Garfield High guy to make the NBA. His debut, earlier this year with the Blazers, was anti-climactic.
Fellow Bulldog Will Conroy's, however, was not. Conroy's too small for the NBA, he doesn't have a great shot. Hell, he started his UW career as a walk-on. Finished it as the school's all-time assist leader. We can't ever remember thinking that he'd make the league until, really, tonight, when Seattlest David and I watched it happen live (thank you NBA League Pass).
And it was damned exciting. Conroy came on with 2:53 left in the first quarter, received an inbounds pass, and who should be guarding him as he brings the ball up the floor but fellow Seattleite Jason Terry, who once played guard for Garfield's archrival Franklin (though a few years before Conroy. Terry, in fact, married a Garfield Class of '96er, and showed up last summer at that class's 10-year-reunion). Conroy and Terry have probably played pick-up hundreds of times at local gyms, so that might have been a little familiar.
Conroy's first move was finding a wide-open Pau Gasol for a 18-foot jumper. Gasol missed it--robbing Conroy of his first NBA assist--and David jumped up to yell "I HATE YOU, YOU TAPAS-EATING JERK!" (Gasol's from Spain). Tapas is now banned from Seattlest HQ for a week, and we'll be calling our store of aphrodisiac "Freedom Fly."
His first floor action lasted only two minutes, he didn't compile any counting stats, but then he didn't turn the ball over either. He played solid defense on Terry and generally looked like he belonged on an NBA court, unlike some former Huskies we can think of.
We're thinking about buying jerseys for all five six seven Metro League guys in the league and decorating the Seattlest HQ basement with them: Jason Terry, Nate Robinson, Jamal Crawford, Brandon Roy, Martell Webster, Conroy, and Doug Christie.
UPDATE: Conroy never got back in the game, which his Grizzlies lost by one.

Around The -Ists This Week

You forgot about Jamal Crawford.
You're right, Jon--thanks! I fixed it.
dan dickau was not a husky - he went to Gonzaga
Dan Dickau was a Husky, but then he went to Gonzaga his final two years of eligibility. He's still a disappointment, but, then again, so is most of the Blazers squad.
Come on, fellas. Dan Dickau will make a great coach someday.
Doug Chrsitie jerseys make great gifts.
love the dawg posts, keep it up.
What about Marvin Williams? Is Bremerton in metro league?
Bremerton is in the Olympic League, on the other side of the Sound. But--Gig Harbor, in the Narrows League, has a really good player named Clarence Trent.
