Two nights ago, we were frantically hunting for our Nano. We played the "last time we saw it" game, as it is usually tucked safely in our purse and had apparently gone AWOL. Let's see--we listened to it riding the bus on Thursday, didn't use it Friday...Thursday night we went mountain biking but were chatting with folks at the beginning of the ride, so we put it in the pocket of our bike shorts. Our bike shorts. Which Mr. Seattlest was kind enough to wash for us on Friday.
Oh shit.
(To be fair, we don't root through his pockets before washing anything of his either--as responsible adults we're supposed to empty our own pockets before things go in the laundry bin, right? Besides, as we've feared since we got it, that thing obviously weighs almost nothing and we've constantly been afraid we'd lose it or put it through the wash.)
Thankfully, bike clothes don't go through the dryer in our house, so it only suffered water and not the extra indignity of a circuit-frying heat cycle. So long, not-so-old friend, we sighed. We were screwed.
But a friend had done the same thing, it turns out. (This was the same friend who consoled us after we drove into the garage with our bike on top of the car. He'd done it twice.) In fact, we were less alone that we thought. Let it dry out, our friend said. This was echoed by Howard at the Bellevue Square Mac store. It might come around, they both reassured me. Plug it in to a power source (it won't have any charge to speak of, per Howard), then turn it on.
This morning, we fired it up, and rejoiced to see the little Apple appear on-screen. For the past 30 minutes, we have been advised to "Please wait. Very low battery."
And so, we wait.

Friendly Folk-Pop for the Kids: Hey Marseilles at Vera This Saturday

Oh my God, that's almost as sad as Barbaro!
The key to rescuing any electronics from water is to turn the power off ASAP. Most damage is caused by the water shorting out something and causing it to burn out. Once you completely dry it out, clean off any residues with rubbing alcohol [it evaporates rapidly].
With something like that Nano, I would be worried that there is still water inside. If it heats up excessively when charging, there is probably still water inside.
It happened to me the same!!!Running with R&B (my Ipod's name...), put it in my jacket's pocket...everything ended in the washing machine....
Now I'm waiting to come to the US again to buy another little mp3...
I'm close to you...
Elisabetta!
As for driving into the garage with the car on top - bikebouncer is great for preventing that. www.bikebouncer.com - you can buy one from one of the listed re or e-tailers

Thanks Kevin, but unfortunately it won't help my situation as the garage in question is a gigantic cement building at my office...
I have found, however, that a hitch-mounted rack solved that problem right quick.
Well, I just found this page googling. Googling on what, you ask? "ipod washing machine" of course, because I just now washed my ipod nano that I left in my pants by accident. No dryer cycle at my house either.
Happily, it seems this isn't too uncommon, and can have a happy ending, so, here's waiting for a day before seeing how it goes...
Darn things are SO light, aren't they?
Well, this just happened to me with my BRAND NEW 8GB Nano...and not a good ending.
I waited the requisite two weeks, including drying it out with a hair dryer set on "low" every now and then. Then...voila! It turned on and looked as it if would work. It did, for a week! I was thrilled and even became one of those smug arses who makes jokes about how iPods all "need a good washing now and then."
I could smack myself. This morning, I went to turn on my ipod and NADA - it wouldn't go on, won't charge, nothing. It's pretty much dead to the world.
I will refrain from whining and just go pay the damn $180 for a new one, I guess.
Wow... mention washing an iPod and everyone comes out to comment. Interesting...
