"Do You Believe in Miracles? YES!!!"

onionchutney.jpgIt's the end of an era. Check out the standings list below and you'll see "Hüsker Don't," as you might expect -- but you'll see them in third place. Ever-renamed team State of the Onion played Nancy Zerg to HD's Ken Jennings, as did comeback kids Thaiku Hookers, who took second place.

Of course, Tiger Woods doesn't win every golf tournament; just because Hüsker Don't is mortal doesn't mean they're pushovers.

It was a raucous evening, with 22 teams crammed into the poor little Old Pequliar. Many thanks to Courtney, who helped us with data entry and ensured we finished at a reasonable hour, and also made a damn fine swag model.

"James = pussy" wrote one team on their photo round answer sheet, and we have to cop to that. We caved in and gave credit to people who identified the sword-wielding Uma Thurman as "the Bride," as well as "Beatrix Kiddo." Giving two points to the Kiddo camp struck even us as unadulterated wishy-washiness, but so it goes. Between that and yesterday's incisive critique of our hosting style, we tossed and turned until 4:30 last night, questioning our place in the universe.

We still stand by not giving credit to people who identified Jackie Bouvier Kennedy in a photo cutting a wedding cake with JFK as Jackie Onassis, though. You were about a decade off, people.

Finally, yes, we fucked up a question. The scores below award a point to everyone who answered "Niagara" as a river that forms part of the border between New York and Ontario, as well as my intended answer, "St. Lawrence." We left out a crucial "longest" in the question; totally our fault. Happily, only a few final standings changed, none of them prizewinners.

Updated: The quiz itself is on QuizNight. And fourth-place team Faust requested a round on The Big Lebowski for next week, so you might want to swing by Scarecrow on your way home. (They gave us a choice of 3 categories, actually: BL, ancient Greece, or Shakespeare's plays. We opted for door #1.)

Our team was miserable last night (yes, we did put Onassis - I don't know what we were thinking), but I consider Husker Don't coming in 3rd a moral victory....

I love the moral victory concept in this regard. I was surprised to find our team one point ahead of them at the halfway mark. I knew something was up. Of course, they went on to trounce us in the second half so that small triumph was short lived. Hey James, any chance the questions will be posted to Quiznight?

"Only a few dozen people were at the Old Pequliar that night, but as years passed the number of people claiming to have been in attendance reached into the thousands."

or

"If Old Pequliar trivia night should last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'"

Narrator: It was only a game of trivia. But that one night changed America ... forever.
