Roads Are Icy and Clogged with Abandoned Cars

After listening to the various radio stations this morning, here's the scoop:

There's at least some ice on all the roads, even Interstate 5.

Many access roads are icy and clogged with abandoned cars from last night and this morning.

NE 145th St is closed between 20th NE and Lake City Way (there's a considerable acclivity there, apparently it got too icy to drive).

The Olympic Mountains look absolutely beautiful.

As usual, the problem isn't so much the condition of the roads, which by, say, Vermont standards are what you'd see in April, but that so few people have traction tires or chains. Then there's those subset of people who are simply clueless, like the girl we saw talking on her cellphone as she drove 99 in heavy traffic last night. These people tend to drive too fast, not know how to drive in winter, and end up spinning their cars into ditches. They--not the roads--are the true hazard here.

All I have to say is that these people clearly aren't reading somethingawful.com - if they were, they would know how to drive in the snow in Seattle.

true dat. other people is my biggest concern when driving when the weather is no good.

i'm by no means experienced at driving in icy conditions, but i do know to slow down, leave lots of space, and no sudden braking or accelerating, and i should be good.

and getting off the phone helps.
