100% Chance Of No Snow

nosnow.jpgWe've been amazed recently about how right the weather forecasters have been. It still gets a little sketchy when they're talking about a few days out, but when the subject is tomorrow or later today and they say it's going to start snowing at this time and it will come down with such and such intensity for whatever duration and deposit x number of inches of white stuff at 5th and Pine downtown while the winds blow at a specified speed and the air is a specific temperature - When they say things like that they've been absolutely right, and frankly, it's sucked. When are they going to predict 60 degrees and sunny and be right? "They" the weather cabal or whoever. But, yesterday it seems like they weren't right because there's not a lot of snow in Seattle and we're at the office, which is great - We can't take any more snow or wind or tsunami days at home and we're tired of hearing from other parts of the country about what a mild winter we're having.

The Weather Underground still says there's an 80% chance of snow today. The UW's Probcast says there's a 65% chance of precipitation and the likely amount is .04".

My friend and I want to make some "Fuck Seattle Snow Panic" hoodies, put them on and stand behind Jim Foreman (who will hopefully be wearing his Disaster Parka) as he reports the breaking news that snow is cold and it falls from the sky.

Uh, Jack? That WSDOT thing is from yesterday. It says Tuesday right there on the top.

  • They said that yesterday too, so we (and apparently everyone else who works on the east side and lives in Seattle) made a mad dash home at 3:30 only to sit in traffic worthy of 5:30 instead. Without the promised weather terror, it was sorely disappointing.

  • Users of Probcast should keep in mind that the .04" of predicted rainfall refers to the amount should it fall as rain. As a general rule you can multiply that figure by 10 to get the equivalent amount of snow - so still, Probcast is saying less than half an inch should it fall as snow.

Also, this points out the lack of a snow product in Probcast - the stats are tricky!

  • WSDOT says it will start getting shitty at about 4pm.
