Top Ten Sportsball Games of 2006
10. Mariners vs Yankees (August 22): The Yankees kept taking the lead and the Mariners kept coming back. In the ninth, with the score tied 5-5, A-Rod came up with a clutch bases loaded strike out. Later that inning Adrian Beltre won the game on a walk off home run.
9. Seahawks vs Green Bay (November 27): The field was covered in snow, Alexander ran for over 200 yards, Hasselbeck over came a slow start and Stevens was getting booed all over the stadium. It looked like the team was back, healthy, and ready to make a run. Thank you sweet Jesus for a thing called the NFC West.
8. Huskies vs. UCLA and Sonics vs Phoenix (January 14 and January 22): Two great games that nobody saw. As the Seahawks we're picking up their first playoff win since 1984, the Huskies got their first win at UCLA since 1987. The next week as the Seahawks were winning the NFC the Sonics beat the Suns 152-149 on a Ray Allen three at the buzzer.
7. The Apple Cup (November 18): The Huskies combined big plays with a little bit of Coug magic to salvage what at one point looked like a great season.
6. Huskies vs UCLA (September 23, 2006): The Bruins stormed out to a 16 point lead, at which point Isaiah Stanback took over and the Huskies won 29-19. The ultimate, what could have been game after Stanback suffered a season ending injury three weeks later.
5. Seahawks vs Rams (October 15 and November 12): If you think the Seahawks are in a world of hurt now, just think where they would be if Josh Brown hadn't booted game winners against the Rams. Well, 6-9, and probably still alive for a NFC Wild Card spot.
4. Huskies vs Illinois (March 18): Why are we passionately in love with Lorenzo Romar? The Huskies were down 11 with twelve minutes, and it didn't look good. Romar called a timeout and told his team that if they could stop Illinois center James Augustine, who had been driving the Illini, they would win the game. Augustine never scored again and the Huskies won 67-64.
3. Seahawks vs Carolina (January 22): If you had no rooting interest in this game it probably wasn't that great. However, since we did…HOLLY FUCKING SHIT. THE SEAHAWKS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO[breath]OOOOOO!
2. Super Bowl XL (February 5): Yeah the Hawks lost, and yeah they really should have won, but it was the Super Bowl. From the end of the NFC Championship game until we realized that things weren't going our way, it was incredible. Oh, and Kelly Herndon's 76-yard interception return, was the highlight of our winter.
1. Huskies vs. UConn (March 24): This gets the number one spot, just because of the sheer pain inflicted. There was never a point in the Super Bowl when we felt; our team was going to win. When the Huskies were up four with thirteen seconds left, as much as didn't want to, we couldn't help but think this game was done. We had won, we were going to beat George Mason the following Sunday, and the Huskies would be in the Final Four. Then Mike Jensen provided UConn with a three point play. A missed Washington free throw, a three pointer, a wretched overtime period later and it was over. We've been spending time with friends back in town for the holidays, and this game keeps coming up. It will probably keep coming up for the rest of our lives.
