Get Out

KARAOKE: Wednesday night is always karaoke night at the Little Red Hen, an outpost of country music that's inexplicably smack dab in the middle of Volvo-driving, NPR-listening, holiday-tree-owning Green Lake. The crowd veers toward the early-20s spectrum, so if you need a break from parties where people discuss mortgages, the new Whole Foods, and their fucking jobs, this is the place to go. Tip: Bring cash so you can buy beer from the guy with the cooler instead of standing in a long line at the bar.

9pm // Little Red Hen [7115 Woodlawn Ave N (one block off of Green Lake)] // No cover

JAZZ: For a more sophisticated crowd, head down to Pioneer Square and see bebop horn player Floyd Standifer. We won't do the traditional list of legends he's played with; just know this: as long as he's playing, you can hear the terrific be-bop sounds of the late 40s and 50s live and in person. As soon as he stops, you won't, and you'll regret it. The man plays every Wednesday with the best group of musicians in town, make a point to see him.

8pm // New Orleans Restaurant [114 First Ave. S] // No cover

COMEDY: Todd Barry has a trademark deadpan delivery, but despite his lack of inflection being his delivery vehicle of choice and bordering on shticky, the man knows his way around some observational humor.

9pm // Chop Suey [1325 E. Madison St., Capitol Hill] // $5, 21+

FOOD: It's cold, it's windy, you want something spicy and filling and tasty, and oh, yes, BBQ. We swear by the Steel Pig. Ate there last night and had ribs that were just falling off the bone, drenched in a spicy but somehow fresh sauce that invaded our collard greens and corn muffin with delightful results.

Dinner-type hours // Steel Pig has two locations [601 Roy St. in Queen Anne and 8904 Aurora in North Seattle] // A rib platter is about $10

BOOKS: The mayor, the city council prez, and others are just going to love all over Tim Egan tonight. The local correspondent for the NY Times is now a National Book Award winner for his book about survivors of the Dust Bowl. He'll read from the book at the event, you can buy the book there, and he'll sign it. Note the early start time--presumably so Greg Nickels can get home in time for America's Next Top Model.

5:30pm // Seattle's Central Library [1000 4th Ave., Downtown] // Free.
